We all breathe. But to learn how to breathe with awareness can transform our lives and our yoga. Come learn the benefits of embracing a life long breath practice based on ancient yogic wisdom and modern physiological science. You will go home with a set of techniques and protocols that will deepen your understanding of living and breathing in harmony with the rhythm of your body and bring balance to your nervous system. This workshop-like class is open to beginner and seasoned practitioners of yoga alike, as well as yoga teachers.
This workshop will include a general overview of Prana, the Nadis & the nervous system, Pranayama philosophy from the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, as well as the anatomy & physiology of breathing. We will cover the following practices and their benefits:
*Durga Pranayama (3 Part Breath)
*Resonance Breathing (Sama Vriti)
*Chandra and Surya Bedhana (Single Nostril Breathing)
*Nadi Shodhana (Alternate Nostril Breathing)
*Kapalbhati Kriya (Cleansing practice)
*Bhramari Pranayama (Bee Breath)
These practices will be broken down and explained. Joanne will then lead you through a full Level 1 Pranayama class that incorporates simple asanas (postures) to assist in opening the body for better breathing and the Pranayama practices listed above. Class will end with a guided Yoga Nidra meditation. Students will go home with the ability to develop a home Pranayama practice based on what is offered in this class and/or a better understanding of how to teach these practices to their students.
